The People’s Council Café will utilize its resources to raise awareness to various social issues and to redress them. These issues include economic and class gaps in Israel, gender inequality, the environment, LGBT rights, rights for people with disabilities, at-risk youth and animal rights. The People’s Council Café will initiate activities and also collaborate with other NGOs and associations.
The activities will depend on you - the People - and around the needs of our community.
Examples of projects and activities
Supporting social businesses
The People’s Council Café will opt for products produced by social businesses and will organize joint awareness activities. For example:
- Holding wine tasting events with the Tulip Winery (which employs people with disabilities), and offering the wines for sale;
- Serving bread and other baked goods from the bakeries Yeladudes and Cookieot (which employ at-risk youth) and selling their products;
- Serving desserts from Choconoy (a chocolate factory that employs people with disabilities);
- Using tableware and decorative accessories from Pure Expression (at-risk youth), Susanart (at-risk youth) and Alut (people with autism), and offering their products for sale.
Raising awareness
- Hold panels and lectures of professionals and public figures on a variety of social and communal matters that are, or should be made, part of public discourse;
- Screen films that deal with social issues along with discussions with the film makers or with public figures and professionals.
Promoting Israeli culture
The People’s Council Café will endeavor to give exposure to young artists and artists from disadvantaged communities by:
- Holding exhibitions (the art works will be on sale, and the artist will receive 100% of profits);
- Organizing performances, plays and literary gatherings;
- Screening student films;
- Arranging events to introduce beginning actors.
Supplying resources to the disadvantaged
- The café will serve as a collection center for donations of clothes, toys, books, etc;
- The café will give surplus food to organizations that collect food for the needy.
Women
- A volunteer social worker will be available at the coffee shop at fixed days and hours to provide assistance to women;
- Women’s meetings and workshops led by community leaders.
Judaism and the nation
- We will hold meeting and joint study sessions for religious and secular Jews and for those who want to learn more about Judaism;
- Jewish holidays celebrations with ethnic and pluralistic traditions;
- Commemorating Memorial Day with an intimate ceremony.
The environment and animal rights
- We will hold workshops and series of lectures on implementing ecological principles in our everyday life and on urban ecology;
- The coffee shop will separate and recycle its garbage as well as use recycled materials when possible;
- The café will not use any materials or products, the production of which involved animal testing.
Accessibility
- The café will be fully accessible including toilets for the disabled, ramps and wide doorways;
- The café will have a menu in Braille.
Miscellaneous
- Professional consultations with interior designers, personal coaches, stylists, lawyers, and business consultants, will be available at no charge on fixed days;
- A tailor or seamstress will work at the café on a regular basis;
- Student discounts during University exam season;
- Jam sessions;
- Film festivals and lecture series;
- The café will have a library of second hand books to be used by our guests.
